What I'm doing, reading, and thinking about right now

Last updated: April 2025 · Springfield, MO

Reading

Working slowly through the Gospel of John — trying to read it the way a first-century reader might, without knowing how it ends. It's difficult. Everything feels loaded when you already know.

Also reading Matthew Henry's commentary on the Psalms alongside the KJV text each morning. I keep a notebook nearby. Henry is verbose but rarely wrong.

Thinking about

The relationship between slowness and faithfulness. I'm convinced we read too fast, pray too fast, and generally move through Scripture at a pace that prevents it from doing anything to us. Still working out what I want to say about this.

Writing

A long piece on Psalm 46 — specifically the phrase "Be still, and know that I am God." I want to resist the therapeutic reading of that verse and recover something of its original force. It's harder than it sounds.

Otherwise

Serving as assistant pastor at our church in Springfield. Drinking more coffee than I should. Trying to be a better listener.

This is a /now page — a simple way of saying what I'm focused on at this point in life. I update it occasionally. If you have one too, I'd love to know.
